From an educational perspective (as a both a current student and a future teacher) is Wikipedia a blessing or a burden? As a future teacher, what would you tell your future students about Wikipedia's role in education?
As a future teacher and a current student I believe Wikipedia can be both a good thing and a bad thing. I have found that Wikipedia has been very accurate most times when I needed to use it to look something up. The burden of it is that anyone can make an account and change the information on any subject. The blessing of it is that is can quickly give you information on anything that you can think of. It is always being updated so even new information, products, or events can be found on Wikipedia.
I will tell my future students that Wikipedia is not something that you can rely on 100 percent of the time. Other sources will be needed when completing a project. It is a good thing to use when looking for a quick answer to something but it is not appropriate to use Wikipedia to write a whole paper.
Danielle,
ReplyDeleteYour approach with your future students is a well-reasoned way to make certain that those who use Wikipedia (regardless of what authorities say) stand a better chance to see it for what it is - CB
true thoughts, BUT editors go in and delete the wrong facts!!! but other than that i completely agree and i dont think i would let my students write a whole paper based on wikipedia facts either!
